Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen | Upgrading of Lingnan Lychee Industry: Tech Empowerment and Innovation in Production & Sales Boost "Sweet Economy"

2025.07.22

From the millennia-old lychee trees in Zengcheng District, Guangzhou, bearing fruit again to major producing areas celebrating bumper harvests, the Lingnan lychee industry is making the leap from traditional cultivation to modern agriculture through technological innovation and model upgrading. As learned by Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen, geographical indication products like Xianjinfeng have been revitalized through top-grafting technology. Originating from two mother trees in Xiancun Town, Zengcheng, this high-quality variety has now been promoted to 6 provinces and cities across the country, with a planting scale exceeding 250,000 mu. According to fruit farmer Liu Jingchao, grafting Xianjinfeng onto existing varieties such as Guiwei and Nuomici not only enables off-peak marketing but also significantly increases the sales price per unit, effectively extending the value of the industrial chain.

Research institutions have made breakthroughs in solving the age-old problem of lychee preservation. The "freeze dormancy" technology jointly developed by South China Agricultural University and Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences uses liquid nitrogen at -196°C for quick freezing, maintaining the integrity of cell structures and achieving a preservation period of up to one year. After applying this technology in Conghua District, fruit farmers have seen an income increase of about 2,500 yuan per ton of lychees. Customs data shows that in the first half of 2023, the Guangzhou Customs supervised the export of 2,818.6 tons of lychees, a year-on-year increase of 17.6%. By establishing a full-process quarantine and supervision system, Lingnan lychees have achieved a market pattern of "year-round supply and global sales".

In the production-sales connection, Guangzhou has innovatively launched group logistics solutions. Three convenience service points set up in Zengcheng District integrate scattered orders, allowing small and medium-sized orchards to enjoy bulk logistics discounts. Conghua District, on the other hand, has built an express network with 350 collection points, securing 47,000 tons of pre-sales orders as early as mid-June. Offline markets, such as the Luogang Lychee Market in Huangpu District, have achieved efficient production-sales connection through standardized management and multi-channel expansion. Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen notes that this "online + offline" three-dimensional sales network is transforming Lingnan lychees from a seasonal specialty into a branded agricultural product available year-round, injecting sustained momentum into rural revitalization.
