Food Exhibition | Building a Global Seafood Trade Network to Help Build the Greater Bay Area into a "Marine Food Base

2025.05.23

The vast blue ocean holds unlimited potential for Shenzhen's development, and modern fisheries are becoming a new engine for improving urban quality of life. As a key initiative in building a global marine center city, Shenzhen continues to drive the high-quality development of its marine industries. The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

The core of maintaining the best quality of seafood lies in temperature control. From deep-sea fishing to end consumers, a comprehensive temperature-controlled system is crucial.

To seize market opportunities and transition from scale expansion to quality enhancement, Shenzhen Port Group established a professional cold chain operations team in 2022, fully expanding port cold chain services and building an end-to-end service system covering customs clearance, storage, distribution, and marketing.

The group is also actively advancing digital transformation, using smart technologies to improve efficiency in warehousing management, cold chain logistics, and park operations, creating an intelligent port ecosystem.

Currently, Shenzhen's port area has achieved full coverage of a -18°C constant-temperature cold chain, ensuring stable quality for all types of seafood.

With its comprehensive service system, Yantian Port has become a major hub for imported frozen food in South China. Its seafood distribution network covers over 60% of the country, and its meat imports account for more than 95% of Shenzhen's market share. Data shows that by the end of 2024, the port's frozen cargo throughput had exceeded 1.12 million tons.

"We are committed to transforming port functions from traditional logistics hubs into trade platforms, helping Shenzhen build a complete marine food industry ecosystem," said a representative from Shenzhen Port Group in an interview.

With the advantages of its ports, Shenzhen's fisheries industry is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade in its value chain.

In 2023, the Shenzhen International Tuna Trading Center was officially established in Dachan Bay Port Area. Supporting projects such as ultra-low-temperature storage facilities and specialized processing centers are accelerating. Once completed, the center is expected to form an internationally influential price reference system, strengthening China's voice in the global high-end seafood market.

The Food Exhibition notes that with ports at its core, Shenzhen is building a complete modern fisheries system, steadily advancing toward its goal of becoming a world-class marine industry city.

In the process of building a global marine center city, Shenzhen has attracted numerous international guests, including officials from Pacific island nations, Middle Eastern diplomats, and European and American industry experts, through high-profile events such as the International Fisheries Expo. These platforms have effectively promoted in-depth cooperation between Shenzhen and countries along the Belt and Road in areas such as fisheries resources, trade, and technological innovation.

"We focus on building industry connection platforms, facilitating the efficient flow of resources, and striving to create a globally influential fisheries industry event," said a representative from Shenzhen Port Group.

By integrating global high-quality resources, fostering industrial ecosystems, and improving infrastructure, Shenzhen Port Group continues to strengthen its role as a critical node in the global supply chain. With port operations as its foundation, the group is continuously extending its logistics services and marine economy industrial chains, building a business model of "hub ports + logistics networks + trade platforms," and aspiring to become a globally competitive comprehensive marine industry service provider.

Technological innovation drives the development of the marine industry. Shenzhen Port Group has partnered with China's top marine research institutions to establish joint laboratories, promoting the commercialization of advancements in marine biotechnology and deep-sea aquaculture equipment. It has also formed an industrial innovation alliance with over 80 marine-related enterprises and institutions to deepen industry-academia-research collaboration and cultivate internationally competitive marine industry clusters.
