International Food Exhibition | China's Homebred White-Feather Broiler Breeds Achieve Major Breakthrough with Growing Market Share

2025.05.26

Latest data from the China Animal Agriculture Association reveals that three domestically developed white-feather broiler breeds captured over 28% of China's market share in 2024, marking a 3 percentage point increase from the previous year and demonstrating significant achievements in China's poultry breeding innovation. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

As the world's largest white-feather broiler producer, China recorded 8.55 billion birds slaughtered in 2024 with total chicken meat output exceeding 20 million metric tons. Notably, before 2021, China completely relied on imported breeding stock for white-feather broilers. This dependency ended when three homegrown varieties - "Shengze 901," "Guangming No.2," and "Wode 188" - received national certification in late 2021, ushering in a new era of independent breeding for China's broiler industry.

To accelerate adoption of domestic breeds, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs implemented special policies in 2022, designating three breeding enterprises as national key players in seed industry revitalization and recognizing them as core national breeding farms. The 2024 integrated promotion pilot project introduced an innovative "promotion first, subsidy later" mechanism that effectively connected production with market demand.

Market response indicates outstanding performance of domestic breeds. With 13.4 million sets promoted in 2024, these varieties have not only gained solid domestic foothold but also entered international markets including Tanzania and Pakistan. Producers widely report that while maintaining local advantages, the domestic breeds now approach international advanced levels in production performance, significantly boosting farming confidence.

"We're building a complete industrial ecosystem from laboratories to farms," said a breeding company executive. The promotion focus has expanded from large conglomerates to medium and small-scale farms, while actively establishing upstream-downstream collaboration platforms to drive integrated industrial development.

The International Food Exhibition notes that officials from the National Animal Husbandry Station emphasized that seed industry revitalization requires multi-stakeholder collaboration: government will continue strengthening policy support including approximately 20 yuan subsidies per eligible breeding set; breeding enterprises must increase R&D investment to improve commercial breeding systems; industry associations will build promotion platforms to help quality breeds "go global."

Industry experts note that with continuous improvement in breed performance and growing market recognition, China's poultry breeding sector is entering a new phase of high-quality development. Supported by policies, technological innovation and market forces, domestic breeds are expected to further increase their market share.
