International Food Exhibition | Central Asian Cherries Land in Yangtze River Delta Market

2025.05.29

In the early hours of May 26, a flight carrying fresh cherries from Uzbekistan landed at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. After completing expedited customs clearance procedures, approximately 5 tons of this imported fruit will be quickly distributed to major supermarkets across the Yangtze River Delta region. This marks the first introduction of premium cherries from this origin to the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai area. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

Every early summer, Central Asia enters its cherry harvesting season, coinciding with a gap in domestic cherry supply. Uzbekistan, leveraging its superior natural conditions, cultivates distinctive cherries with plump flesh and balanced sweetness, with annual production exceeding 120,000 tons, making it one of the world's leading cherry exporters.

The International Food Exhibition notes that to ensure maximum freshness, this shipment utilized express air transport. "We achieved point-to-point delivery from Tashkent to Hangzhou using aircraft belly cargo space," explained an official from Hangzhou Airport Customs. The direct flight route opened last year has not only facilitated passenger travel but also established an efficient channel for importing perishable agricultural products.

Zhang Ming, Customs Director of Zhejiang Jietong International Logistics, stated: "The direct flight takes just 6 hours. Combined with the customs' 'pre-clearance and fast inspection' model, the entire process from landing to shelf placement takes no more than 8 hours." Thanks to the newly built customs inspection facility adjacent to the tarmac at Xiaoshan Airport and innovative measures like "pre-declaration and immediate inspection upon arrival," overall customs clearance efficiency has improved by over 50% compared to traditional methods.

Statistics show that in the first four months of this year, Hangzhou Airport imported 18 tons of fruit, representing a 25% year-on-year increase. With continuous improvements in import clearance efficiency, more high-quality overseas agricultural products are rapidly finding their way into the shopping baskets of Yangtze River Delta consumers.
