International Food Exhibition | Jilin Pancake: From Street Food to Global Delicacy

2025.05.09

In a modern food factory in Huadian City, Jilin Province, 52-year-old Master Zhao is intently operating an automated pancake production line. Golden batter spreads evenly across temperature-controlled metal plates, transforming into paper-thin pancakes in less than thirty seconds. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

Few could have imagined that this traditional snack, once commonly seen only on northeastern Chinese streets, has now crossed oceans to appear on supermarket shelves in international metropolises like Sydney and Seoul. "After so many years in this business, I never thought our pancakes would be sold overseas," Master Zhao remarked emotionally.

The history of Huadian pancakes dates back to the 1980s. At that time, Hongshilazi Town was home to hundreds of pancake workshops. Thanks to the premium grains grown in Northeast China's fertile black soil, these crispy, flavorful specialty snacks gradually gained widespread recognition.

"Pancakes today are far more than just simple sustenance," explained General Manager Gao of a local renowned pancake company. His factory recently exported 1.5 metric tons of multigrain pancakes to Australia while also developing over ten new varieties including red date and low-sugar options to cater to diverse consumer preferences.

In the production workshop, reporters observed smart equipment operating at high efficiency. Workers simply pour prepared batter into the automated production line, where machines precisely control temperature and timing to complete the entire process from spreading to packaging. A single production line can churn out thousands of standardized pancakes per hour.

The International Food Exhibition notes that this perfect marriage of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology has boosted Huadian's annual pancake output beyond 7,000 metric tons. The rapid development of enterprises has also driven local agriculture, with hundreds of contracted farmers like Brother Liu - a major grower - supplying premium grains directly as raw materials for pancake production.

A representative from Huadian's Commerce Bureau stated that over ten local pancake manufacturers are currently seizing opportunities in healthy food trends and domestic brands going global, building a complete industrial chain. From field to table, offline to online, these pancakes carrying the authentic flavors of Northeast China are writing a new industrial legend.
