International Food Exhibition | Cambodia's Mango Industry Ushers in New Vitality

2025.05.12

Across the rolling hills of Kampong Speu province, golden mangoes hang heavy from the branches. Local farmers busily transport baskets of fresh mangoes to processing plants, where the fruits undergo cleaning, slicing, and drying before being shipped internationally as delicious dried snacks - some reaching overseas supermarket shelves in as little as ten days. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

This land once faced the paradox of "bumper harvests without prosperity." Despite producing high-quality mangoes in abundance, the lack of reliable sales channels meant piles of fruit would slowly rot beneath the trees. "We used to watch our mountains of mangoes go to waste while struggling to make ends meet," recalls one local farmer.

The turning point came in recent years. With deepening international agricultural cooperation, modern fruit processing facilities were established locally. These plants introduced advanced equipment and technical standards, not only solving the mango sales dilemma but significantly increasing product value. Now, tens of thousands of tons of mangoes are processed annually, creating employment for thousands of villagers.

"Life has completely changed," shares one processing plant worker. "We can both sell our mangoes to the factory and earn steady wages working here." His family has progressed from crowding into a tiny dwelling to building a proper home.

Technological innovations have brought remarkable transformations. Under the guidance of international agricultural experts, local farmers have adopted scientific cultivation methods, doubling mango yields. More encouragingly, Cambodian mangoes are gaining global recognition, with export values growing annually - particularly to Asian markets.

The International Food Exhibition notes that the industry's boom has stimulated surrounding communities. Vibrant commercial districts with restaurants and convenience stores have emerged around processing plants. Educational opportunities are expanding too, with many workers' children receiving schooling support.

"These dried mangoes aren't just sweet - they carry our hopes for the future," a young female worker smiles. From "gluts to gains," Cambodia's mango industry is writing a new chapter of development, bringing tangible benefits and happiness to local communities.

This transformation reflects the fruitful outcomes of regional agricultural cooperation. Facilitated by multiple trade agreements, premium agricultural products are reaching global markets, achieving the leap from "growing well" to "selling well," and injecting new momentum into local economic development.
