International Food Exhibition | Ningxia Launches First Direct Cold Chain Freight Train to Europe

2025.05.20

On May 12, a freight train loaded with Ningxia's specialty frozen agricultural products departed from Yinchuan Railway Logistics Center with a sounding horn. Carrying internationally standardized refrigerated containers, the goods will travel via the scheduled Yinchuan-Qingdao Port railway service before seamlessly transferring to ocean-going vessels at Qingdao Port. Maintaining constant temperature-controlled conditions throughout the journey, the shipment will ultimately reach Hungary and Poland. This inaugural service fills the gap in Ningxia's direct cold chain logistics access to Europe. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

The train adopts an innovative "one-container-through" transport model, eliminating the need for container transfers from Yinchuan loading to Qingdao Port shipment. Equipped with intelligent monitoring systems, the entire transportation process achieves full-visibility supervision. This approach not only avoids multiple handling procedures common in traditional shipping methods but also reduces cargo damage rates to industry-leading lows, providing reliable cross-border logistics solutions for Ningxia's temperature-sensitive products including frozen agricultural goods and pharmaceutical products.

"This cold chain train service marks the first integration of scheduled railway services with international refrigerated container shipping," said a representative from Ningxia Commerce Department's Port Management Office. "It combines the punctuality and efficiency of rail transport with the extensive coverage of maritime shipping and precise temperature control of cold chain logistics, establishing stable supply chain support for Northwest China's specialty agricultural products entering European markets."

According to the general manager of Ningxia Yinguan Food Company, traditional shipping methods required 40-50 hours with unreliable schedules, while the new train service saves nearly 20 hours in transit time while reducing logistics costs by approximately 20%. Statistics show that since the Yinchuan-Qingdao Port rail-sea intermodal service launched in July 2023, it has handled accumulated cargo volume exceeding 13,000 TEUs, becoming a new driver for regional economic development.

The International Food Exhibition notes that the regular operation of this dedicated route is expected to save Ningxia's export enterprises over 15% in logistics costs while facilitating deeper integration into the Belt and Road cold chain logistics network. In the future, this international logistics corridor will expand to more European countries including Germany and France, opening broader overseas markets for premium agricultural products from Northwest China.
