South China food expo| From Sugarcane to Rum: Circular Economy Chain Unleashes New Industrial Momentum

2025.07.08

News from the Ningming County section of Pingxiang Industrial Park in Guangxi: On July 1st, inside the production workshop of the Ningming County Rum-Sugar Circular Economy Industrial Park, technical teams were busy debugging equipment. This soon-to-be-operational smart production line will transform sugarcane into premium rum through precision processes such as pressing, fermentation, and distillation. Such innovative developments in agricultural byproduct processing closely align with the "Innovation Drives the Future" concept promoted at the South China food expo.

Xu Yizhang, production director of Guangxi Balai Rum Co., Ltd., stated that leveraging Chongzuo's strategic transportation hub and diverse fruit resources, the company has a natural advantage for differentiated development. The first phase of the project has been completed and is now in the critical equipment inspection stage. Upon operation, it is expected to generate an annual output value of 1.5 billion yuan, opening new value opportunities for the sugarcane industry. This full industrial chain development model vividly embodies the South China food expo's "From Farm to Table" philosophy.

The innovative practices of this circular economy industrial park highlight Chongzuo's strategic approach to resource utilization. In recent years, the city has capitalized on its border location and resource advantages to focus on nurturing new energy and circular economy industries. By driving technological innovation, it has steered the sugarcane industry toward greener, higher-end development—a path that offers valuable insights for technical exchanges at South China food expo.

At the Central South University (Chongzuo) New Quality Productivity Industrial Base, a breakthrough has been made in high-value sugarcane bagasse utilization. Through refined conversion processes, bagasse has been successfully transformed into supercapacitor carbon-based materials, with stable production achieved and three batches of samples already delivered.

Equally impressive is the hydrogen production facility at the base. Its biomass green-power hydrogen system, using agricultural and forestry waste as feedstock, reduces energy consumption by 50% compared to traditional methods. This innovation not only provides new ideas for clean energy development but also demonstrates the limitless potential of cross-industry collaboration.

From basic agricultural processing to high-value-added products, Chongzuo's circular economy industrial chain has achieved exponential growth in resource value. This development model, powered by technological innovation and green energy, sets an example for industrial upgrading in border regions. It is reported that Chongzuo will deepen cooperation with research institutions like Central South University to accelerate the commercialization of innovations and scale up more projects.
