Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen| Jiangjin: Hometown of Chinese Sichuan Pepper– The Road of Industrial Upgrading from Traditional Cultivation to Global Fame

2025.07.30

Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen has noticed that Chongqing's Jiangjin, known as the "Hometown of Chinese Sichuan Pepper," is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Its 530,000-mu (about 35,333 hectares) sichuan pepper planting base is evolving from traditional agriculture to a modern, international industry. Here, this ancient condiment is stepping onto the world stage through technological innovation and e-commerce channels.

In the pepper gardens of Danfeng Community, Youxi Town, modern equipment such as electric pruning machines, rail transportation systems, drones, and dryers have become standard, completely changing the traditional production methods of manual picking and sun-drying. Jiangjin District has established a strict standard system for sichuan pepper exports. By planning export bases and formulating planting technical specifications, it ensures that the quality of sichuan peppers meets international market requirements, such as those for pesticide residues.

Industrial upgrading has spawned a new professional ecosystem. Dozens of sichuan pepper brokers are active between fields and enterprises. Dai Kesan alone can purchase 150,000 to 200,000 kilograms of sichuan peppers during the harvest season. Yang Huazhong, general manager of Fengyuan Sichuan Pepper Company, said that the company's export volume is expected to exceed 10 million yuan this year, a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%. At the same time, the e-commerce channel has also achieved significant growth, with the highest number of orders for a single video live-streaming reaching over 10,000.

South Korean businessman Park Songlin has been cooperating with Jiangjin for more than ten years, importing more than 10 tons of sichuan peppers monthly for the South Korean catering market. Food Expo 2025 in Shenzhen learned that currently, Jiangjin sichuan peppers are sold to more than 20 countries and regions around the world, including major markets such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. To expand the international market, local enterprises have set up warehouses overseas and developed innovative products such as sichuan pepper beer and sichuan pepper laundry detergent to extend the industrial chain value.

"Our ancestors carried sichuan peppers down the mountain in baskets, but we will 'carry' them to the world through the Internet," said Yang Tianxu, a returnee entrepreneur, echoing Jiangjin's determination to transform its sichuan pepper industry. From traditional cultivation to modern production, from offline sales to global e-commerce, Jiangjin sichuan peppers are writing a new chapter in the internationalization of Chinese agricultural products.
