International Food Exhibition | Agricultural Exports Achieve Breakthrough Growth in Hexi Corridor

2025.04.29

As a pivotal city along the ancient Silk Road, a prefecture-level city in Gansu Province has leveraged its exceptional natural endowments and centuries-old farming traditions to achieve remarkable progress in agricultural exports in recent years. Official statistics indicate the city is now home to over 30 key agricultural export enterprises, with annual export value approaching 300 million yuan - accounting for more than 70% of the city's total exports - reaching markets in over 20 countries and regions. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

Nestled in the heart of the Hexi Corridor, the city's flat terrain, abundant sunshine, and premium water resources have established it as a nationally significant agricultural production base. Current cultivation areas for vegetables approach one million mu (66,667 hectares) with annual output exceeding two million metric tons, while certified export production bases exceed 300,000 mu (20,000 hectares). In highland summer vegetable exports, the introduction of specialized enterprises has enabled complete industrial chain development, transitioning from traditional agency exports to direct export operations. Data reveals the city's direct exports of highland vegetables doubled last year, surpassing 20 million yuan in value.

"We're building modern cold chain logistics infrastructure and plan to expand export vegetable bases beyond 3,000 mu (200 hectares)," stated an agricultural enterprise executive. The company's "enterprise + base" operational model has created employment for over 200 local farmers, with products primarily destined for Southeast Asian markets.

The International Food Exhibition notes that in processed vegetables, annual production capacity reaches 70,000 metric tons, now meeting export standards for European and American markets. Through cultivating industry leaders, processing capabilities and international competitiveness continue to rise.

As a national seed production hub, the city's corn seeds and vegetable/flower seeds are gaining global recognition. Last year's seed exports totaled 180 million yuan, growing over 100% year-on-year, reaching markets across Europe, America and Asia. A seed company manager noted: "We've established stable production partnerships with 14 countries, with annual export value around 20 million yuan."

To sustain export growth, local authorities have implemented multiple initiatives: securing export credit insurance for 30+ key exporters; supporting special fund applications; and adding five new export-certified bases covering 21,000 mu (1,400 hectares). This year has seen six new import-export enterprises established, bringing the total to over 40.

"We'll continue supporting market expansion efforts, with ambitious targets for major agricultural exports," said a commerce department official. Goals include: 20%+ growth for vegetable seeds, 40% for processed vegetables, and 50% for highland summer vegetables.

Future plans include organizing trade exhibitions and professional training to enhance exporters' global competitiveness. The city also aims to consolidate regional resources to develop internationally influential export leaders, driving high-quality development in outward-oriented agriculture.
