Food Exhibition | Latin American Specialty Products Gain Popularity in China's Consumer Market

2025.05.14

Chilean cherries, premium Brazilian coffee, Ecuadorian white shrimp, and other distinctive Latin American products have recently sparked a consumption boom in the Chinese market. As economic and trade ties between China and Latin America and the Caribbean deepen, these unique imported goods are entering the daily lives of Chinese consumers through both online and offline channels. The Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

According to Chinese customs statistics, the total trade volume between China and Latin America in 2024 exceeded $518 billion, a 6% increase from the previous year. Imports reached $241.4 billion, marking a nearly 50% growth over five years. These figures highlight the thriving economic and trade cooperation between China and Latin American countries.

Against the backdrop of China's consumption upgrade, high-quality Latin American products are gaining increasing favor among Chinese consumers due to their competitive advantages. For example, in 2024, over 90% of Chile's cherry exports were shipped to China, generating sales exceeding $3 billion. Data from domestic retail platforms showed that sales of premium cherry gift boxes surged by 40% year-on-year during the Lunar New Year season.

The Food Exhibition notes that beyond cherries, other Latin American agricultural products have also performed exceptionally well in the Chinese market:

Peruvian Sun Mangoes debuted in Guangzhou to positive reception.

Ecuadorian roses sold over 40,000 stems in a single wholesale market during the Spring Festival period.

Brazilian coffee beans have become a new favorite among urban professionals.

Fruits likeChilean prunes andPeruvian green grapes** continue to see strong sales.

Marcelo Flores, a Peruvian flower exporter, noted, "Chinese consumers' demand for high-quality flowers has grown significantly, with our exports of amaryllis bulbs increasing year after year."

China's ongoing policy of expanding openness has created favorable conditions for Latin American goods to enter the market. To date, China has signed and implemented free trade agreements with five Latin American countries, including Chile and Peru. Earlier this year, Ecuadorian canned tuna successfully entered the Xiongan New Area market under the benefits of the China-Ecuador FTA.

During a recent visit to China, Marcos Winkler, a representative of Chile's dairy industry, expressed confidence in the potential of China's dairy market. Peruvian scholar Carlos Aquino pointed out, "Through platforms like the China International Import Expo (CIIE), China actively promotes import trade, benefiting both domestic consumers and the global economy."

Experts predict that as China's consumer market continues to upgrade and the China-Latin America FTA network expands, bilateral trade cooperation will embrace even broader prospects. Professor Zhang Xinyu from Sun Yat-sen University noted that FTAs have significantly enhanced trade facilitation, allowing more high-quality Latin American products to reach Chinese consumers efficiently.
