International Food Exhibition | Vietnam's Seafood Exports to China Experience Explosive Growth

2025.05.15

The latest trade data indicates a strong start for Vietnam's seafood export sector. According to statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the country's shellfish exports achieved remarkable performance in the first quarter of 2025, with overseas sales exceeding $63 million—a staggering 109% year-on-year increase. Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding performance of the Chinese market, where imports surged to over $23 million, representing a nearly 20-fold growth and making China the largest overseas buyer of these Vietnamese products. The International Food Exhibition will offer more information about import and export.

Breaking down by product category, Chinese consumers demonstrated robust demand for Vietnam's specialty seafood from January to March this year. Data shows that live babylon snail sales reached nearly $16 million, fresh clam products about $5 million, and quick-frozen scallop products approximately $3 million. These three categories formed the mainstay of Vietnam's seafood exports to China.

The International Food Exhibition notes that in response to this sales boom, VASEP industry experts have advised businesses to focus on three key areas for improvement: first, strengthening product quality control; second, optimizing post-harvest preservation techniques; and third, perfecting end-to-end traceability systems. Additionally, standardizing aquaculture processes and strictly implementing quarantine standards are seen as essential requirements for continuously developing China's high-end market.

The latest survey from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development indicates that the country's bivalve aquaculture scale continues to expand. Statistics show that professional aquaculture waters now cover over 41,500 hectares, with annual production capacity maintained at around 265,000 tons. This industrial foundation provides strong support for sustained export growth.
