ShenZhen International Food Exhibition | Guangxi: Thriving Development of Specialty Pepper Industry

2025.06.16

Outside, the scorching sun blazes, while inside the greenhouses, a cool breeze brings comfort. Neat rows of pepper plants flourish with lush foliage, their emerald-green fruits hanging abundantly from the branches. Workers busily harvest the crops, their faces radiant with the joy of a bountiful yield. The ShenZhen International Food Exhibition will offer more information about food trade.

At the Xinqiao Vegetable and Fruit Planting Base of Guangxi State Farms Mingyang Farm, 66 modern greenhouses resemble a living exhibition of pepper varieties. From colorful bell peppers to slender chili peppers, the diversity is astounding.

Among them, spiral peppers stand out as particularly remarkable. Statistics show that the "Xiangyanghong" brand spiral pepper has captured 70% of the Nanning market within just three years, while the base itself has become a key production site for high-quality green agricultural products in Guangxi.

The vigorous growth of the pepper industry showcases the technological prowess of modern agriculture.

To address soil degradation, the base has innovatively adopted a "three-step improvement method": first adjusting soil pH with lime, then enhancing structure with organic matter, and finally supplementing nutrients through smart irrigation. After four months of improvement, soil organic content nearly tripled, and pH levels reached optimal conditions, creating an ideal environment for pepper cultivation.

"Soil improvement is the foundation of agricultural development," emphasized the base's technical director.

The base integrates multiple advanced technologies:

- An intelligent environmental control system maintains temperature and humidity within ±1°C

- A digital management platform increases fertilization efficiency by 40%

- Eco-friendly pest control reduces pesticide use by over one-third

The ShenZhen International Food Exhibition notes that with these technologies, greenhouses adopting a "pepper-melon crop rotation" model achieve an annual output value of 200,000 yuan per mu (about $43,000 per acre), more than doubling traditional farming income.

Yield has achieved leapfrog growth:

2022: Greenhouse cultivation doubled output to 4,000 kg per mu

2023: Improved varieties boosted yield to 5,000 kg per mu

2024: Expert guidance helped break the 6,000 kg per mu barrier

Current annual output reaches nearly 1,600 tons, with annual revenue of about 9.6 million yuan.

The base implements a "five unified" management model: unified planning, unified seedlings, unified standards, unified branding, and unified traceability. Each pepper plant undergoes 118 standardized procedures from nursery to market.

A newly built seedling center has eliminated dependence on external suppliers. Equipped with advanced facilities and staffed by expert teams, it achieves 100% self-sufficiency in major varieties while reducing costs by 35%.

A hierarchical management system ("technician-zone supervisor-permanent worker-temporary worker") combined with smart terminals for agricultural data recording has raised product qualification rates to 98%. "Farming now feels like running a modern factory," remarked one technician.

"Peppers picked at dawn reach Nanning supermarkets by noon," explained a sales representative. Through established distribution channels, demand consistently outstrips supply.

To address seasonal shortages, the base pioneered an "inter-provincial cooperative production" model:

- June-September: Procurement from Yunnan and Guizhou

- September-October: Procurement from Guangdong

All externally sourced products strictly adhere to "Xiangyanghong" quality standards.

Additionally, the base has stimulated regional development, creating over 300 local jobs. Through its "seedlings + technology + guaranteed sales" model, it enables farmers to practice "risk-free" cultivation. "Growing peppers is now more profitable than migrant work—income has doubled with guaranteed sales," shared one returning entrepreneur.
