Asia Food Exhibition|Zhejiang Pastry Maker’s Mooncakes Head Overseas for Mid-Autumn

2025.09.16

As Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, Asia Food Exhibition has witnessed a historic moment: the first-ever export of mooncakes from Taizhou, Zhejiang. A batch of mooncakes weighing 1.6 tons—including varieties such as Five Kernel with Ham in Savory Sauce and Five Kernel with Ham and Egg Yolk in Savory Sauce—recently passed inspection by Taizhou Customs and were shipped to Vietnam from Yuhuan City. This marks the first time mooncakes produced in Taizhou have been exported.

Jiang Pingmei, general manager of the local food company behind the shipment, expressed excitement about this breakthrough. Although her company is a time-honored brand with over 30 years of experience in the domestic market, this was their first international order.

“We were thrilled and a bit nervous,” she admitted. “Export requirements are extremely strict, especially concerning ingredient traceability. We had limited knowledge of foreign regulations and market practices. Thankfully, customs officials provided on-site guidance throughout the entire process—from sourcing raw materials to understanding destination requirements and completing export declarations—enabling us to successfully fulfill this order.”

To support specialized agricultural and food products in going global, Taizhou Customs has launched a special campaign focused on helping time-honored brands expand into international markets. Specialists have been sent to companies to conduct detailed reviews of quality control and safety protocols covering raw material acceptance, production processes, and final product release.

In addition, the customs authority has implemented an intelligent inspection management system, offering services such as pre-scheduled clearance and accelerated examination and release.

“Mooncakes are highly seasonal with a short sales window,” explained Zheng Yantao, head of the inspection division at Taizhou Customs’ Yuhan office. “To help businesses seize export opportunities, we’ve not only opened a green channel for mooncake exports but also adopted ‘cloud issuance’ of electronic inspection and quarantine certificates. This ensures efficient and compliant exports for these specialty products.” Asia Food Exhibition believes that with the assistance of technology, China's food export industry will continue to thrive.
