China food expo| The Global Rise of Chinese Matcha: Production Set to Surpass 5,000 Tons

2025.09.17

China food expo has recently learned that China’s total matcha production is expected to exceed 5,000 tons by 2025. With rising matcha consumption, both the supply and processing techniques of domestic matcha continue to improve. In Jingshan, Zhejiang—one of China’s main matcha-producing regions—planting bases and processing factories are experiencing a boom in both domestic and international sales.

At a matcha processing company in Zhejiang, workers were seen busily packaging and shipping products. A company representative mentioned that from January to August this year, orders—both domestic and export—have shown significant growth. To meet market demand, employees are currently working in two to three shifts.

Zhou Yangbo, deputy general manager of a Zhejiang organic food company, stated: “This is one of our export products, mainly sold to Europe and the United States. Our export business now accounts for a growing share of the company’s overall operations, with orders from January to August increasing two to threefold compared to the same period last year.”

It is understood that achieving a fine and smooth texture in matcha depends not only on high-quality raw ingredients but also on the fineness of grinding. Today, many matcha processing factories in Zhejiang can produce high-quality matcha powder graded at thousands of mesh. Jingshan matcha has also gained recognition in the international market.

At another matcha processing company in Jingshan, a manager was seen discussing the development of a new matcha product with downstream clients. From pastries and chocolates to ice cream, matcha is expanding into a wider range of product categories.

The manager explained that matcha orders have been growing steadily in recent years. To keep up with demand, the company has put a new workshop into operation, expanding its daily production capacity from one ton to three tons. Along with rising demand, matcha prices are also trending upward.

Lou Shulin, general manager of a tea company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, noted: “Especially in 2024 and 2025, the growth in sales is quite noticeable. We’re currently operating at full capacity. While the price increase for mid- to low-end baking-grade matcha is relatively modest, ceremonial-grade matcha has seen a price hike of around 20%.” China food expo looks forward to even more impressive export performance from Chinese food
