China food expo|Tibetan Delicacies Go Global: Matsutake Mushrooms & Wine Bridge Continents

2025.09.25

Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China’s first prefecture-level ethnic autonomous region, is gaining international recognition for its specialty agricultural products. Known for its unique geography and natural conditions, Ganzi has become a key production base for high-value foods such as matsutake mushrooms and high-altitude wine—both increasingly sought after in global markets. China food expo commends the successful international market entry of Ganzi's distinctive products.

“King of Mushrooms” Races Against Time

Matsutake, often called the “king of mushrooms,” thrives in nine counties across Ganzi, including Yajiang. On September 9, 300 kilograms of freshly harvested matsutake were shipped via flight 3U3963 from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport to international buyers.

“Matsutake is highly perishable. Speed and temperature control are critical, and customs efficiency is our top concern,” said Losang Kezhu, head of Litang’s Shangri-La Green Food Development Company.

To address these challenges, Leshan Customs—under Chengdu Customs—has established a “green channel” for expedited inspection of exported fungi. The channel offers inspection, rapid clearance, and round-the-clock services to maintain freshness. The office has also promoted paperless certification, smart review, and self-printing of certificates of origin, reducing costs for exporters. Since the start of this year’s harvest season, 152 batches of matsutake have been exported under customs supervision.

Highland Wine Finds Fans in Europe

Thanks to policy support for agricultural restructuring, Ganzi’s Derong County has emerged as a producer of high-altitude wine. In one case, a shipment bound for the U.K. was selected for inspection, posing a tight deadline due to logistics.

“We reached out to customs for urgent support,” said Quan Shiping of Derong Sun Soul Agricultural Products Processing Co., Ltd.

Despite a 1,000-kilometer distance between the inspection site and Leshan Customs’ office, a team was dispatched and completed 17 inspection items within three days. They also coordinated with Chengdu Customs Technical Center to expedite two lab tests, ensuring on-time delivery. From January to July, Ganzi exported 1,452 bottles of wine.

On September 10, Chengdu Customs convened a forum in Yajiang with local government and businesses to discuss expansion strategies for Tibetan specialty products. Customs Director Bi Kexin emphasized, “We will continue to tailor policies to support ethnic region enterprises, optimize the business environment, and pilot reforms such as batch inspection waivers and green channels for perishable goods—helping more local specialties go global.”

According to Chengdu Customs, Ganzi’s foreign trade reached 65.968 million yuan in the first seven months of 2024, a 7.5% year-on-year increase—a record high for the period. China food expo aspires to bring more regional specialties to the world stage.
