2024.07.31

The China Agricultural Outlook Report (2024-2033) (hereinafter referred to as the Report) released at the 2024 China Agricultural Outlook Conference on April 20 shows that China's production capacity of grain crops will steadily increase in the next 10 years, and it is expected that by 2033, grain yields will reach 429 kilograms per unit; the output will grow steadily, and in 2033 it will reach 766 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%.

Report was written by the Agricultural Market Analysis and Early Warning Team of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Report points out that in the next 10 years, with the development of new agricultural productivity, agricultural transformation and upgrading, and the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, China's comprehensive production capacity of grain and other important agricultural products will continue to strengthen, and the quality of supply and market competitiveness of agricultural products will be significantly improved. At the same time, the consumption of agricultural products continues to upgrade, the sources of agricultural imports are more diversified, and the prices of agricultural products show a steady upward trend.

The Report shows that in the next 10 years, the sown area of rice will show a steady and slightly decreasing trend, but due to the continuous improvement of yields, the output will increase steadily. Rice production is expected to reach 217 million tons in 2033, with an average annual growth rate of 0.4 percent. Consumption of paddy is decreasing steadily, by 0.2% per year. Among them, ration consumption and feed consumption are on a downward trend, industrial consumption is growing, and the overall supply and demand of paddy is maintaining a loose pattern.

In the next 10 years, the overall sown area of wheat will remain stable, yields will continue to improve, and production will grow steadily. Wheat production is expected to reach 146 million tons in 2033, with an average annual growth rate of 0.6%. As the price relationship between wheat and corn returns to normal, wheat consumption for own use will decline significantly, and the total consumption of wheat will show a steady and slightly decreasing trend, with an average annual decline of 0.4%. Due to the increasing production capacity of high-quality specialized wheat, wheat imports will be high down.

In the next 10 years, the sown area of corn will remain stable, yields will continue to improve, and production will grow steadily. Production is expected to reach 323 million tons in 2033, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%. Corn consumption will grow steadily, at an average annual growth rate of 1.1 per cent, and imports will decline, and are expected to decrease to 6.8 million tons in 2033.
